The snow is quickly disappearing, I have garden starts in the greenhouse (but can pull them back into the safety of the house if necessary) and I'm thinking spring.  I'm also thinking next season though!  We have four shows lined up and they are doozies.  The first one is big--Kathy Mattea!  Then it's Dan Tyminski (voice of George Clooney in Oh Brother and guitarist and singer for Alison Krauss and Union Station).  Returning favorites are Karen Savoka and John Gorka.  We'll likely be putting the Passports on sale early this year, so stay tuned or better yet, get on our email list!

Happy New Year everyone!  We have had to cancel the Chris Hillman show, originally scheduled for January 15.  You can call Trudy (488-0556) if you bought a ticket and would like a refund.  Or you may hang on to your ticket and use it as credit towards a future show.  Thank you for your patience.

Well I have been fortunate enough to have filled our freezer with blueberries, halibut, salmon and now moose!  Time to start thinking about winter and a great lineup of acts.  Check out www.acousticadventures.com/acts.html in the next few days to see our entire season and learn how you can buy your season ticket (Passport).  It almost makes you look forward to winter!  -Trudy

Cyber Event Awareness Folks!

As I watch the hordes of Red Polls swarming my bird feeder, I'm reminded of the mosquitoes that will be here in a few months.  For now, I'll take the lovely birds.  And for a much needed infusion of live music in the heart of winter, I'll take WILLY PORTER & NATALIA ZUKERMAN!  These two will be performing this Friday, Feb 6 at Pioneer Park Theatre at 8pm.

I have to admit that I wasn't super familiar with these two when we booked them--mostly we were impressed by the rave recommendations of the Anchorage promoter who's had Willy up in the past, and because of frequent requests for him.  He has a big following in his home state of Wisconsin and now that I've been listening to his CDs, I can see why.  Rather than try to describe his music, you can go to his website and to Natalia's and get a sample there.  These two will be a real treat for guitarists fans too.  There's links from our webpage at www.acousticadventures.com/acts.html

Meanwhile I'll put out some quotes from the media who say it better than I could...

"Willy Porter was terrific--an acoustic picker with the Olympian speed of Leo Kottke, bolstered by rootsy vocals and twisting, offbeat lyrics that evoked John Hiatt... This audience embraced Porter as though he were already a star"  ~Boston Globe

And about Natalia...
“She has nimble fingers capable of picking up to thirty notes per measure, and when she sings she can switch from scat to swoon in the course of a glissando.” ~The New Yorker

Tickets are available at Grassroots Guitar on College Road, by phone from me at 488-0556, or online at our website.

As always, we are very grateful to sponsors, Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation, Sophie Station Hotel and Dollar Rent-A-Car.

Stay tuned for information about THE BOBS who will be here for a show on March 22!  Grammy-nominated a cappella acrobats.... think Manhattan Transfer meets Monty Python meets Jimi Hendrix.

Off to refill the bird feeder!  -Trudy

October 16/08

Greetings Cyber Event Folks: With all the financial and political news these days, we are offering a musical bail-out.  This month we have two acoustic adventures that should give everyone a chance to experience four great artists.  We'll have a concert tomorrow night October 17th featuring an old favorite, Bill Staines from New Hampshire in a double bill with a great young singer-songwriter, Slaid Cleaves from Austin Texas.  Staines suitcase of songs includes poignant songs like "River" and cute ones like "All God's Critters Have a Place in the Choir" and he just keeps putting out new songs and albums.  Cleaves is riveting...  Entertainment weekly says "Cleaves tells gorgeously compact stories in a voice packed with Texas trail dust."

Then the day before Halloween, Thursday October 30, we're offering another concert that is not the least bit scarey.  Patty Larkin will be in a double bill with Peter Larkin.  These two amazing guitarists and singer-songwriters have been here before but never shared the stage for one of our concerts.  It will be awesome.

Both these shows are in our favorite theatre at Pioneer Park and are sponsored by FNSB Parks and Rec, Sophie Station Hotel and Dollar Rent-A-Car.  Tickets and information are at our website www.acousticadventures.com/acts.html   Also it's not too late to buy a season pass that includes both these shows plus a concert Feb 6 with Willy Porter and Natalia Zukerman.

Tickets are also available by phone at 488-0556 (that's me) or by going to Grassroots Guitar on College Road.

I hope all is going well for you.  As always, thank you for supporting live music.

Sept 15/08

Greetings Cyber Event Awareness Folks:

We are happy to announce our Acoustic Adventures season. Passports are available now for $80 each. Starting Sept 21 individual seats will go on sale. We'll likely add a show or two during the season as opportunities present themselves, but we wanted to get the current season ticket out there for these 6 artists packed into 3 double bill concerts. Passports get you the best seat in the hall, a slight discount, and are transferable. And when you buy a Passport you are supporting our efforts and giving us your vote of confidence. We appreciate that and we certainly can't do it without you!

We'll kick things off on Friday, October 17 with Slaid Cleaves and Bill Staines. You're probably familiar with Bill who treats Alaska almost as a second home. He's like an old friend coming back to visit and sing some of his gems for us. Entertainment Weekly sums Slaid up nicely: "Cleaves tells gorgeously compact stories in a voice packed with Texas trail dust." Give him a listen by going to his website www.slaid.com  . Thursday, October 30, we've got Patty Larkin in a double bill with Peter Mulvey. Both of these artists have drawn international accolades for brilliant guitar playing and highly original, memorable songs. Check them out at www.pattylarkin.com and www.petermulvey.com Friday, February 6 the much requested, dazzling guitarist Willy Porter joins forces with Natalia Zukerman in a show that will appeal to fans of fine musicianship and intelligent, thought provoking lyrics. Willy, a near-legend in Wisconsin, produced Natalia's latest and finest album. Plan on a strong solo set from each performer augmented by moments of inspired collaboration. Their websites are www.willyporter.com  and www.nataliazukerman.com

All of these shows are at Pioneer Park Theatre and are sponsored by Sophie's Station Hotel, FNSB Parks and Recreation and Dollar Rent-A-Car to whom we are extremely grateful! Information and tickets are at our website www.acousticadventures.com/acts.html

Other non-Acoustic Adventures events that I'd encourage you to attend are with my friend Esther Golton with her friend and another fine songwriter Danny Schmidt. Details follow.

Whatever you choose to do, enjoy these wonderful Fall days. Thanks for your support as always! -Trudy

Hi Cyber Event Awareness Folks:

Just an alert to let you know that we are on the cusp of finalizing our season for 2008-9.  We will put Passports on sale soon and will also have individual tickets on sale.  Thanks for your patience!  Trudy

May 3/08

Hi Cyber Event Awareness Folks:

We're having a beautiful day here today and it finally feels like summer may arrive, so I want to make this quick and then get OUTSIDE.  I just wanted to thank those of you who came out (especially those who came out "on faith") to the awesome Tony Furtado concert.  I consider myself fairly jaded from getting to go to so many great concerts and still he totally blew me away!  Yikes, what a great instrumentalist and really nice person to boot.  That was one of my favorite shows!  I hope we can get him back.   Even though we lost money on that concert, I consider it an investment in a future concert to have introduced him to some folks.

While I'm still on a cloud from that show, I want to remind you that Bruce Cockburn is coming next Saturday, May 10 to Hering auditorium.  This is another artist not to be missed.  I keep hearing from people who have seen him in concert who say he puts on a great performance.  The guitarists will be amazed at his playing, and he is also a prolific song-writer.  He had some hits in the 70's and 80's with "Wondering where the Lions Are" and "If I had a Rocket Launcher" but he has hardly sat back after that.  He has 25 albums to his credit and continues to evolve as a skilled lyricist and musician.  Primarily a folk/rocker, his music also encompasses other styles including jazz, blues and other world music. This will be a rare solo acoustic show, which pleases me to no end.   The last time Cockburn was in Alaska his big Anchorage show sold out (we couldn't get him up here that time) and it looks like that will happen down there again.  But I still have way too many good seats.  As usual, you can buy online, call me at 488-0556 or get them at Grassroots Guitar. I would hate to be so outdone by Anchorage--I hope you'll consider going and please help us spread the word.

OK, now for the easy sell--John Prine is coming back!!  He'll be here Friday, August 22 at Hering Auditorium.  Tickets will officially go on sale Tuesday, May 6 at noon.  I won't be advertising to the general public for a while to give you folks first dibs.  The show sold out last time he was here, so best to get your tickets early if you want to attend.

And for just a wee bit more incentive... if you call me before Tuesday for a Bruce Cockburn ticket or you have already bought one, you may get pre-sale John Prine tickets too!  OK now I sound like a mattress salesman.  Time to get outside!  Have a great weekend.  -Trudy

April 18/08

Greetings Cyber Event Awareness Folks and Musicians

I'm just recently back from Juneau's Alaska Folk Festival.  We always do the trip by road and usually come back to breakup in full swing in Fairbanks, but here we are enjoying just a bit more winter.  It's beautiful, but I'm still looking forward to spring after seeing the crocuses in Juneau.

We have two concerts left for our season and they are both gems.  Next Friday, April 25 we will feature TONY FURTADO at Pioneer Park Theatre at 8pm. He is an incredible banjo player and has written some killer tunes on that instrument.  His latest album has the slide guitar and song-writing taking the forefront.  So if you like bluegrass, blues, songwriting, slide-guitar, banjo, you can't miss this one.

Tony has been described as an acoustic bluesman, slide guitarist, banjo wizard, songwriter with an emotionally riveting voice.  He started playing banjo as a teenager and when he was 19 he won the Grand National Banjo Championship at the renowned Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in Winfield Kansas.  By the time of his second release "Within Reach" he was playing and recording with such luminaries as Jerry Douglas, Alison Krauss and Laurie Lewis.  1994's "Full Circle" marked a discovery of his passion for the acoustic blues and slide guitar of musical influences like Ry Cooder and Blind Willie, and the sound continued with 1997"s "Roll my blues Away".  Highlights from 1999 to 2003 include releasing a recording with Grammy-winner Dirk Powell and two live albums of Tony and his band.  2007 saw the release of "Thirteen" with a foray into songwriting and singing.

For information and to hear audio clips of Tony's music, check out www.myspace.com/tonyfurtadomusic  Also you can tune into Banjo Signal at 8pm next Wednesday on KUAC/FM 89.9 to hear a bunch of Tony's music.

The last concert of the season will be May 10 with legendary Canadian super-guitarist, Bruce Cockburn in Hering Auditorium.  More on that later!  Also I'll let you know when John Prine tickets go on sale soon to give the Cyber Event Folks first chance at that one.  Whoohoooo

As always, please pass this email on to your friends if you think they might be interested.

Take Care, Trudy
